Carol Stream, Ill. - June 10, 2013 – What happens when you put a group of software developers into a conference room with a gigabit fiber link? Pure ‘appiness.’

More than 75 programmers gathered together at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara in California June 7-9. The participants had access to open data sets and the chance to work on platforms from OSIsoft, Aeris Communications, Esri, ILS Technology, and ioBridge. Following an inspirational kickoff talk from a U.S. Dept. of Energy representative on June 7 regarding open data sets, the teams and individuals began their 36-hour endeavor to create the next great M2M app.

This second annual event was hosted by Connected World magazine, as a part of its annual Connected World Conference event, being held June 10-13, also in Santa Clara, Calif., both at the Hyatt Regency and the Santa Clara Convention Center.

“I was so pleased with the creative minds of the developers we met at the M2M App Challenge,” says Peggy Smedley, editorial director of Connected World magazine. “As I witnessed everyone working through the night, fueled by energy drinks and dedication, I found myself inspired. The level of passion I saw, driving these people to create great things—apps that solve real pain points in our lives—it was very impressive. I was glad to be a part of it, and it was an awesome way to kick off our Connected World Conference.”

M2M App Challenge participants ranged from local developers, coders, and students. The winning applications represent a new take on buzzworthy trends like the connected car, connected healthcare, energy efficiency, and more.

“Everything went very well. We had a total of eight teams participating, ranging from one-to-five people per team. The focus on the live car data was a good choice; people like it and get creative with the concept. Many are using both the PI System and Esri’s platform,” says Michael van der Veeken, OSIsoft V-Campus engineer.

“It was a great event. I think it was a superb team effort. I really think everyone enjoyed the weekend and we pulled off something really special in a very short period of time with a gigabit,” says Jim Morrison, CEO, Lit San Leandro. “I was really impressed with the caliber of people that participated and the apps they created.”
