Carol Stream, Ill. – April 3, 2012 – April marks the beginning of the third-annual National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, an initiative that aims to educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving. On Tuesday, April 17, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood will join The Peggy Smedley Show to discuss distracted driving, which is one of the most critical issues of our time.

Distracted driving has become a major point of focus for a number of organizations and passionate individuals who recognize it has become a destructive trend in the United States. While some wish to address the problem by banning all cellphones and handheld devices in vehicles, others believe technology may actually be a part of the solution. During the interview, LaHood and show host Peggy Smedley will discuss the most recent developments in the distracted-driving debate, including the latest research and some of the potential solutions.

LaHood is perhaps the foremost advocate against distracted driving in the U.S. His efforts throughout the past few years have called for a cultural shift in how Americans view safe driving. Smedley, too, has taken a strong stance against the irresponsible use of devices while behind the wheel. In the past, Smedley has interviewed high-ranking officials from organizations such as the National Safety Council and the Governors Highway Safety Assn.

“Distracted driving is an issue near and dear to my heart,” says Peggy Smedley, editorial director of Connected World magazine and host of The Peggy Smedley Show. “Every day I see people misusing their devices by texting behind the wheel, taking their focus from the road and creating life-threatening hazards. I’m 100% in favor of a connected world; but I also believe we need to educate the public about safe versus unsafe ways of using technology.”
